SURFACE

I'm sorry, but you can't throw that away. It's too good to die, and I have a need for good surfaces.

I'm a passionate photographer. I was, anyway. I didn't fully appreciate this line of artistry until I stepped into a dark room. Unfortunately, the space between me and my work has been separated by a mouse and a monitor for too long. Did I mention the uncomfortable desk and inappropriate chair? I'd rather be outside, moving, taking pictures or making prints.

Making prints? Outside?

Big, beautiful photos printed on fine paper are a wonder to behold, but there are a couple of problems with that equation. 1. I'm sending the image to a lab, so I don't have the joy of printing myself. 2. The expense of printing, matting, mounting, and framing numerous pieces also has a joy reducing effect.

Image transfer to the rescue.

I found these cabinet doors, complete with hardware. Perfect canvases!

Building up the layers with clear acrylic gel medium and some design work before adding the image...

Normally, I don't pick up anything with MDF or glued particle board, but I loved the detailing on this side table.

The top is going to need some work. Good thing I just broke my finishing sander.

TIP! Always carry a pair of pliers, or a multi-tool, in your car.

I had to remove the legs of this vanity (in the rain) before I could slip it in the back seat. It's so shabby, I may have to do this one next.

This little dresser had a marble, a penny and a guitar pick in every drawer.

I'm definitely going to have to sand off the black dragon.

Again with the particle board! A thick layer had to be scraped off the back, as it was already swelling and falling off.

I really just grabbed it for the legs. If the vinyl stays on and I can seal the back I may attempt a transfer. It is square, and that's a rare find.

Outside of the red stain and candle wax, I'm not sure why this was considered garbage.

This blast from the past was almost bypassed. Because of the particle top, I was only going to scavenge the legs. With mild coaxing I was carrying it all.

Some sanding and linseed oil brought a real richness to the legs. I filled the holes and hit the top with quite a few layers of satin white.

The image has been picked and printed. Just waiting for the ink to dry...
